Church dictionary
Chancel--Eastern end of the church usually reserved for the choir and clergy
Misericord--a hinged choir seat with a bracket, often elaborately carved, that can be leant against
Nave--the main body of the church at the western end where the congregation gather
Quire--ancient spelling of choir
Roodscreen--a screen carrying a rood or crucifix, which separated the nave from the chancel
Transepts--north to south projections, often added at a later date and giving the whole church a cruciform, cross-shaped plan. Some cathedrals e.g. Salisbury feature smaller second transepts
Vault--roof with arched ribs usually in a decorative pattern
